The course is structured to emphasize the principles of construction to ensure structurally safe structure and buildings. The course provides an overview of principle of building and functions and functional requirements of buildings and their elements. It discusses structural concepts and ways of achieving stability in buildings and related works. Emphasis is on developing students’ mindset into the application of appropriate construction principles.
LEARNING OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES
On completing the course participants should be able do the following.
1. Identify, define and describe functional requirements of walls both structural and non structural.
2. Identify and explain the principles and the applications of the three basic structural concepts in construction.
3. Explain what stability of walls entails and the factors that have damaging affect on stability of walls as well as ways of overcoming such factors.
4. Distinguish between Gravity and Cantilever retaining walls in terms of their basics design considerations and constructions characteristic.
5. Explain the forces on retaining walls and proffer measures to overcoming them.
6. Explain piling and underpinning as measures of ensuring stability in walls.
7. Explain and indicate appropriate applications of the following improved techniques in construction
· Reinforced block work
· Cross wall construction
· In- filling panels.
· Curtain walling
