The human resource management function is increasingly significant to business strategy and success. This course entails preparing students to contribute meaningfully at the middle level of the role of human resource management practices in the attainment of organisational goals.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student should be able to:

a.       Describe the nature and scope of human resource management

b.      Explain why strategic human resource management can help an organization gain a competitive advantage for survival.

c.       Describe the steps managers take to recruit and select organizational members

d.      Analyse human resource management practices in organisations


This course provides an overview of the various methods and concepts which make up and affect labour relations in Ghana. Through actual case studies, collective bargaining simulations and by examining collective agreements, the student will gain an understanding of the collective bargaining process and the varying factors that affect employee-employer relations.


This course is to equip students with an understanding of corporate secretarial functions. Students will learn the law which governs and regulates companies in Ghana with particular emphasis on the practical and the procedural aspects. Topics include the duties and responsibilities of a Company Secretary,  powers of the company secretary, company formation procedures, the constitution of a company, the requirements for prospectus, meetings and resolutions, registers and statutory record.

Expected learning outcomes

  • Classify the functions of the company secretary and apply them according to the organisation.
  •  Understand the law and procedures governing board meeting
  • Evaluate the functions of the board and relate them in ensuring good corporate governance system
  • Assess and relate the role of the company secretary as an advisor to the board.
  • Ensure effective communication of information to the board, within the organisation and outside the organisation.
  • Understand the law and best practice in key functional matters (for example, meetings and share capital management)
  • Apply the functions of a company secretary in ensuring corporate compliance through good disclosure and observance of statutory and other regulations
  •  Apply statutory requirements and good practice in relation to shareholder related communications.
